Halogenated hydrocarbons such as halomethanes, halogenatedethanes and ethenes, etc. are introduced into the environmentby man. These contaminants have been found in air, water, and food. Among the individual organic chemicals, themost prevalent at superfund dumps are trichloroethylene, chloroform, tetrachloroethylene, and 1,1,1-trichloroethane(1). A novel water photolysis system with catalysts foroxidation or reduction of organics in situ has recently drawnattention for detoxifying these compounds in the water.Photo-oxidation of organic compounds to C0 2 and HCl in anaqueous suspension of titanium dioxide was reported by Carey(2), Matthews (3), and Ollis (4). Photoreduction of C0 2 andhalogenated hydrocarbons to hydrocarbons was also recentlyreported (5, 6, 7, 8).
