Chriolepis vespa is described from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. It is distinguished from the similar Chriolepis benthonis Ginsburg by its greater number of second dorsal-fin elements (10 vs. 9), greater degree of scale spination, longer pectoral fin, longer fourth and shorter fifth pelvic rays, tongue shape, and color pattern.
