Note
The state of Florida has over 2,000 km of diverse coastline which supports a rich and diverse subtropical and tropical marine flora (Taylor, 1960; Dawes, 1974a). Off the west coast alone, there are over 50,000 km2 of water less than 30 m deep, of which nearly 20,000 km2 (about 2 million hectares or 5 million acres) are less than 7 m deep (Ryther, 1985). Cultivation of seaweeds would appear suitable in these waters where a mild, subtropical climate allows year-round growth of many macroalgal species.
