Note

The objective of research in progress in our laboratory is to establish cell lines of bioactive marine invertebrates that can be used as models to study in vitro production of bioactive metabolites and the factors which control expression of production. We hypothesize that understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in growth regulation and bioactive metabolite production in these organisms will lead to the development of genetically engineered cell-lines capable of overexpression of bioactive natural products. Perhaps more important, however, is the development of cell lines of these 'simple' metazoans to study basic cell physiology and molecular biology that may be applied to understanding more complex metazoan systems, including humans.
