Note

During the past two decades, 30 diseases
that were all new to human
medicine emerged, while other
long-recognized diseases such as
malaria, cholera, and tuberculosis
resurged at a magnitude not seen in developed
countries since the 1850s. Similarly, apparently
emerging and resurging diseases are also affecting
marine mammals, often showing complex
pathogenesis patterns and sometimes involving
immunologic dysfunction.
