When suitable substrate is present, benthic species of the brown algal genus Sargassum are often predominant components of shallow subtidal communities in tropical and subtropical waters (Tsuda, 1972; Wanders, 1976; Connor & Adey, 1977; Cordero, 1981; Morrissey, 1980). Such is the case in shallow subtidal areas of Florida and Caribbean waters where at least twelve benthic species of Sargassum occur (Taylor, 1960).
