Note
Waste stabilisation ponds are growing in
popularity as a relatively inexpensive and
effective method to treat wastewater, but while
many studies have investigated effluents and
seasonal changes in the pond ecosystem, there
has been little information available regarding
the presence and cycling of heavy metals. V. S.
Govindan and Geetha Ramesh of the Centre
for Environmental Studies in Anna University,
located in Guindy, Madras, India, report
on the results obtained from their year-long
study of the presence of cadmium in a waste
stabilisation pond and its effect on plant and
animal life.
