Note

In contrast to this world trend, successful aquaculture has been slow to
develop in the Caribbean. This has, however, not necessarily been due to
lack of effort. The following discussion will consist of a brief review of certain of the
larger and/or better known mariculture projects of the region, roughly in
chronological order, and reasons, where known, of their failure or, where
still on-going, their limited commercial success to date. This will be followed
by mention of some of the more interesting marine research projects
that are still in the developmental stage. Finally, a somewhat more detailed account will be given of the two Caribbean freshwater aquaculture success
stories, Macrobrachium and tilapia farming.
