The interview recounts Mrs. Hunter’s childhood in Summerville, South Carolina amid the racial tensions of segregation and Ku Klux Klan. At the age of seventeen, she married and had her first child. Mrs. Hunter graduated from high school and continued her education at Clafin College graduating with a 4.0 grade average and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. In college, Mrs. Hunter became a member of the NAACP and later during the Civil Rights Movement she worked alongside Ruby Hurley and Medgar Evers. In 1965, Mrs. Hunter earned her Master’s degree in Library and Science and has worked extensively in her field. In fact, she was the head of Head of the Atlanta-Fulton Library System and opened the second and third African American libraries in the U.S. Currently, Mrs. Hunter serves as the Broward County Library’s Associate Director for Public Services and Interim Director for the African American Research Library and Cultural Center.
