Description
The purpose of the study was to develop a model of
guidance services that would take into account the diversified
needs of the new constituencies. The term "new constituencies"
referred to three of the groups newest to
higher education and urban community colleges. Namely,
academically under-prepared, low income, and/or racial and
ethnic minorities were the kinds of students considered.
The major questions of the research problem to determine
if guidance programs were adequately serving new constituencies
were: (1) Are community colleges providing varied
guidance services? (2) To what extent are new constituencies
utilizing guidance services? (3) How do new constituencies
evaluate guidance services? and (4) What are the essential
components of guidance services for new constituencies? The crucial needs of the three constituency groups as
identified from the research, coupled with a comprehensive
review of the literature, formed the basis for the development
of an administrative design for guidance services. The model was found to be especially applicable for
use in urban community colleges comparable to those surveyed
in the study.
