Hattie Ruth Pompey came to Delray Beach by train in 1926 with her parents, the Reverend John and Mary Keyes. Her father was called to Pastor the Mount Olive Baptist Church and her mother was the laundress for the Gulfstream Golf Club. Hattie Ruth attended Delray County Training School from kindergarten until graduation in the eighth grade and then Carver High School, all under the principal S.D. Spady. The family lived at the parsonage, next to the church until her marriage to H. Spencer Pompey. Mrs. Pompey graduated from Carver High School in 1941 along with 25 students. She attended college where she became a member of the A.K.A. Sorority. After college, Mrs. Pompey returned to Delray in 1945 to teach at Carver High School under the guidance of her mentor, S.D. Spady. The interview also covers topics, such as black and white relations, desegregation, and integration.
