Groundwater contaminated with trichloroethylene was detected in Vero Beach, Florida in October 1978. The contaminated water was pumped from the ground and air sprayed into a drainage canal. After the initial increase in concentration when pumping began, the contamination level of the discharged water began to decline; the rate of removal varied for each compound present in the water.
