Note
Sheepsheads (Archosargus probatocephalus)
were spawned and reared under aquacultural conditions,
yielding more than 6,000 juveniles. Survival from
fertilization to 101 d was 39.7%; mean weight was 7.6
g. Survival and growth were better in saltwater ponds
than in freshwater ponds. After 9 months, the sheepsheads
weighed as much as 450 g, and an average 295-g
fish was growing 1.9 gld. In 15.5 months (three with
little feeding), average weight was 573 g. Sheepsheads
are omnivorous, tolerate extreme conditions, grow rapidly,
and are of high food quality.
