Five species of the diatom genus Mastogloia (group Inaequales) were studied using transmitted light (TLM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopy. Specimens for study were collected from the Indian River, Florida (salinity 16–42‰, temperature 9–34°C) as epiphytes on the sea-grass Halodule wrightii Ashers. Both intact frustules and individual parts of frustules are described and interpreted from TLM and SEM observations of M. angulata Lewis, M. erythraea Grun., M. manokwariensis Chain., M. pusilla Grun. and M. schmidtii Heiden. Mastogloia angulata was areolate whereas the other species were punctate. Differences in internal basal valve construction are described for the five species examined. A discussion is included of the morphological characters shown by the SEM studies which led to our use of the name M. manokwariensis for a species which might otherwise be considered, as M. pusilla var. subcapitata Hust.
