Note

Because the "master consciousness" of western culture perceives nature as "background," as Val Plumwood in Feminism and the Mastery of Nature has pointed out, the very life and sustenance that we depend upon is conceived as the weaker element in a destructive, dualistic construction that requires transformation. Val Czerny (M.A., University of Arizona) is a Ph.D. candidate in Comparative Studies through the Literatures, Literacies, and Linguistics program at Florida Atlantic University. Her dissertation, focusing on gender issues and nineteenth-century literature, is concerned with writing that reflects childhood roamings and "lunar" affinities with the feminine principle as it explores the wild side of the imagination and risks expression outside the dominant realm of language. This paper was presented at the Comparative Studies Association 2008 Conference: Interdisciplinarity and Environmental Sustainability.
