Note
The taxonomic status of the sponges of the tropical island region of Oceania is
reviewed and summarized to assist in the development of information management
systems for biodiversity conservation initiatives within the region. More than 1,000
sponge species are listed for the Federated States of Micronesia, Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Hawaii, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu (New Hebrides), Kiribati and Tuvalu, French
Polynesia, the Kermadec Islands of New Zealand, Norfolk and Lord Howe lslands of
Australia, the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, Easter Island and Sala-y-Gomez of Chile,
New Caledonia, and Papua New Guinea.
