Tributyltin (TBT) constitutes one group of the active components in the antifouling coatings used for marine purposes. Environmental issues involved in this use of TBT center on effects on nontarget organisms, particularly molluscs. In many locations where recreational boats are numerous, concentrations of TBT equal or exceed levels that are toxic for sensitive species. Although highly toxic, TBT is not persistent in the environment, suggesting that cautious use may be acceptable. In several countries regulations have been introduced in an attempt to limit the use and, thus, biological effects of TBT.
