Note

Two medusae in the poorly known genus Deepstaria were observed during submersibledives in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The first specimen, identified here as D.enigmatica Russell 1967, was observed, photographed and videotaped at a depth of about600 m in the Catalina Basin off California. The second specimen was observed andcollected at a depth of 915 m near Bermuda, and is described here as a new species, D.reticulum. Both medusae have a voluminous, thin-walled umbrella, a gastrovascularsystem of anastomosing canals, elongate oral arms and no tentacles. Behaviouralobservations made from the submersibles suggest that the medusae trap prey by pursing their voluminous bells shut around organisms which swim into them.
