Note
Fishes associated with shallow coral reef areas off Key Largo, Florida, and the Aves Island group off Venezuela were censused between February and May of 1974. Sixty 2.75-minute super-8 mm underwater movie films or "cinetransects" taken by a SCUBA diver provided repetitive counts of resident fish species. The fish assemblage associated with the Key Largo reefs contained a greater number of species, and also had a higher species diversity and evenness than did that of the Venezuelan reefs. This may reflect the greater structural complexity of the Key Largo reef habitat. A graphic analysis of the proportionate abundance and frequency of occurrence of the two assemblages provided a basis for further comparisons.
