Biochemical and morphologicalheterogeneity in the Caribbean sponge Xestospongia muta (petrosida: Petrosiidae)

Chemical and morphological analyses of the Caribbean reef spongeXeslospongia mula have revealed
that there is significant heterogeneity within this species. There are three distinct sterol compositions, as well as
three morphological types, neither of which appears to be correlated with geographic locality, depth or microhabitat
differences.
