Sargassum polyporum Montagne was collected from the Ryukyu Islands , Japan, and comparedwith S. polyceratium Montagne from the Content Keys, Florida (United States). Blades and vesicles ,the most prominent features , were anatomically similar . Differences were observed in the size ofcryptostomates ; blade bifurcations; winged vesicles ; and spines located on axes, vesicles , and bladepedicels. S. polyceratium was more variable morphologically than S. polyporum, with a greaterproportion of variance concentrated among individuals. Multivariate statistical techniques (multigroupanalyses of principal components and discriminant functions ) distinguished S. polyporum from S.polyceratium. This study shows that (1) geographically separated populations can share importanttaxonomic characters, (2) the amount and distribution of variation in morphological characters differbetween interspecific taxa, and (3) species descriptions must account for ontogeny andenvironmental conditions to eliminate taxonomic uncertainties when morphological traits crossperceived intraspecific boundaries.
