Note
Comparison of the carrageenan-selective CTAB extraction method with the non-selective ethanol extraction
method for polysaccharides allowed determination of lloridean starch content in unattached fronds of
Agardhiclla suhulata cultivated for 4 weeks in tanks receiving seawater enriched with 53.5 µM nitrate and 0 to
20 µM phosphate (P₁) week⁻¹. The minimum floridean starch content was observed when carrageenan content
was maximum at an enrichment of 3 µM P₁ week⁻¹. The alga appears to adjust a balance in the direction of
the carbon flow into storage carbohydrate or structural carbohydrate pools in response to its physiological needs.
