Note

(+)-Discodermolide (1) is a highly functionalized, marine sponge-derived polyketide 8-lactone presumably formed by a combination of propionate and acetate units. 1 was first isolated and characterized by Gunasekera et al. [ at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) from the marine sponge Discodermia dissoluta Crude extracts of the sponge showed strong potency against the murine P388 lymphocytic leukemia cell line, and bioassay-guided fractionation using this assay resulted in the purification of 1.
