Description
There are increasing numbers of older adults living
in Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs).
Many of these residents are living with dementia and Parkinson’s disease. CCRCs are challenged to provide
therapies that enhance ability to carry out activities
of daily living for these residents. The purpose
of this project is to identify effective therapies. The
Stinger Action research model is being used to guide
the project. Students have met with a community representative
who has focused attention on falls, behavioral
problems and pharmacological management
of dementia and Parkinson’s disease. An exhaustive
literature search has been undertaken to provide
evidence. There are pharmacological approaches
to manage symptoms. However, there is less evidence
supporting non-pharmacological approaches
addressing behavioral problems and falls. Models
of CCRC care are evolving and integration of person-
centered non-pharmacological, evidence-based
approaches will be critical and best developed with
resident input.
