Spongivory in pleurotomariid gastropods

Note

Direct in situ observations of feeding together with analyses of the gut contents of Perotrochus midas and P. amabilis indicate that these species feed predominantly and selectively on sponge tissue. Foraminiferal and diatom tests previously reported in the gut contents of pleurotomariids are derived from planktonic sediment coating the surfaces of sponges and do not significantly contribute to the nutrition of these gastropods.
