In addition to embryogenesis, wound healing, and tissue organization, cell-cell
and cell-matrix adhesions are involved in almost every aspect of an immune/
inflammatory response (Springer, 1990; Leff et al., 1991; Albelda, 1991).
Leukocytes must adhere to vascular endothelial cells, extracellular matrix components,
and tissue cells in order to migrate from the peripheral circulation to
sites of inflammation. T-lymphocyte activation on adherence to class 11-positive
antigen-presenting cells is an essential initial step in cascades leading to the
production of antibodies, cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL), and cell-mediated
immune responses.
