Description
Throughout the twentieth century, the Seminole Tribe of Florida has experienced unprecedented changes to their culture, independence, and economic position. They began the century as subsistence based people with few rights to the land, and they ended the century with substantial political power and economically prosperous enterprises while maintaining their tribal status and identity as Seminoles. In the twentieth century, the Seminoles confirmed their historical role from the nineteenth century as having never been defeated, but rather than achieving this image through war acts, as they did in the nineteenth century, they created a new role as being culturally and economically indomitable. This aspect of Seminole history has been largely ignored in the narrative of Florida's history.

Description
Famous mathematician Paul Erdèos conjectured the existence of infinite sequences of symbols where no two adjacent subsequences are permutations of one another. It can easily be checked that no such sequence can be constructed using only three symbols, but as few as four symbols are sufficient. Here, we expand this concept to include sequences that may contain 'do not know'' characters, called holes. These holes make the undesired subsequences more common. We explore both finite and infinite sequences. For infinite sequences, we use iterating morphisms to construct the non-repetitive sequences with either a finite number of holes or infinitely many holes. We also discuss the problem of using the minimum number of different symbols.

Description
Anecdotal accounts of manatees congregating in the Harbor Branch channel have been reported by staff scientists at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute for over three decades. The main goals of this study were to identify individual manatees using photo-identification techniques and collect baseline data on manatee abundance and environmental parameters. During the primary study period (summer 2009), I identified 31 distinct manatees at Harbor Branch. Four manatees were matched with the statewide Manatee Individual Photo-identification System database. I observed the highest abundance of manatees in the small boats marina, suggesting that this location is preferential manatee habitat. Water temperature at the two deepest depths measured (0.6 m and 1.50 m) were the only two significantly different environmental parameters influencing the number of manatees present. The results of this study provide evidence for the Harbor Branch channel as an important manatee habitat.

Description
Entrepreneurship occupies a curious place in economic theory. On one hand, the importance of entrepreneurship is widely recognized, particularly as it pertains to economic growth. However, the entrepreneur lacks a broadly accepted economic theory, and suffers from a dearth of literature on the subject. We believe that this is due to economics' heavy reliance on linear mathematical theory. In this thesis, we use nonlinear mathematics to construct a model of the entrepreneur that captures the sudden destabilization of a steady state, the unpredictability of a creative action, the possibility of entrepreneurial failure, and sensitivity to small changes in environment.

Description
PTFE (Teflon) tape has been reported as an alternative to liquid perfluoroalkanes in fluorous phase-vanishing (PV) reactions. Previous research on PV-PTFE reactions found that PTFE tape has unique characteristics compared to liquid flourous phase screens, including reagent permeabilities that are altered by exposure to certain organic solvents. This study investigates these characteristics by observing the effects of solvent adsorption on the diffusion of bromine and dimethyl phthalate. The directionality of solute diffusion in PV-PTFE chemiluminescence was also studied. Literature on Teflon films and on PV reactions is utilized to explain how the structural and chemical features of PTFE tape influence its permeability, and how solvents alter this permeability. We use structural arguments to explain why chemically-identical bulk PTFE behaves differently from PTFE tape. By better understanding how PTFE tape functions in PV reactions, the method may be improved and its use expanded.

Description
One mechanism allowing ant species to successfully invade new areas at a rapid pace is unicoloniality, the formation of large networks connecting colonies over hundreds or even thousands of kilometers. These large networks of colonies, or "supercolonies" lack any form of intraspecific aggression, thus fighting between them is absent. I used aggression assays to study unicoloniality between colonies of the invasive difficult ant, Technomyrmex difficilis on the Florida Atlantic University Wilkes Honors College campus and a household located ~32 km northwest from the college. I found that for all trial combinations, no aggression took place among the ants. From these results, I conclude that T. difficilis does display unicoloniality in South Florida.

Description
This thesis considers the relationship between scientific advances, identity formation, and literature in an early modern print culture. As medical theorists made their discoveries and defended their work they did so within the literary world; turning to the printed word to cultivate their personal identity and rebut dissenting colleagues. Subsequently, playwright William Shakespeare employed common medical knowledge within his plays. Twelfth Night presents male and female twins within the scope of a comedy that plays upon the issues of cross-dressing and mistaken sexual identity. During the Renaissance, it was believed that male and female seed was co-present in every person and through dominance a distinct sexual identity was developed. This thesis argues that while Shakespeare initially convoluted this by allowing one of the twins to cross-dress; he resolved the anatomical doubling by presenting both characters together on stage at the close of the play.

Description
In an attempt to reduce runaway inflation, the Ecuadorian government froze citizens' checking and savings accounts for a year in March 1999. Nevertheless, Ecuador still experienced hyperinflation later that year. On January 9, 2000, Ecuador established dollarization as a desperate attempt to restore confidence in the economy. In order to test for dollarization's impact on economic growth, I employ an econometrics model with total factor productivity as the dependent variable. I then use dollarization as the independent variable of interest, and other control variables such as oil, and trade. The results reported in this paper suggest that dollarization has a significant positive impact on Ecuador's economic growth.

Description
Phase-vanishing reactions are triphasic reactions that involve a reagent, a liquid perfluoroalkane, and a substrate. In a phase-vanishing reaction with PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) tape as the phase screen instead of a liquid perfluoroalkane, there is no limitation related to the density of a phase, and the denser phase can be in the top layer. Additionally, PTFE tape is inexpensive, easy to use, and reusable. In this work we qualitatively described PTFE tape's thickness, stretching characteristics, and permeability. We investigated the phase-vanishing PTFE method's usefulness both in known transformations and also in a novel nucleophile-assisting leaving group (NALG) reaction with menthol, thionyl bromide, and zirconium(IV) chloride. We successfully used PTFE tape as a phase screen in bromination, bromolactonization, esterification, chemiluminescence, and tandem bromination/esterification phase-vanishing reactions. We found that the PTFE tape is an effective phase screen and useful in performing a slow addition of a reagent.

Description
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometers and gyroscopes are small scale sensors that measure changes in linear acceleration and rotational velocity, respectively. They are fabricated using electronic circuit techniques such as etching and deposition. MEMS motion sensors can be used in an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that can be integrated with the Global Positioning System (GPS) to make a navigation system that is more accurate than each system alone. However, since MEMS-based IMUs are inherently noisy, we must overcome inaccuracies caused by the integration of random noise to find position. Accuracy can be increased by applying digital filters to the data before integration. Comparing the success of finite impulse response (FIR) filters and infinite impulse response (IIR) filters, we found that even though our highest order FIR filter yielded the most accurate position, it was limited by an offset bias in the accelerometer signal and a time delay in the determined position.
