Description
Charles Dudley Collector, his account of the revenue of that port at the time the custom house there was shut up in the month of November 1775. The son of an Anglican cleric from the western part of England, Charles Dudley succeeded John Robinson as Collector of the Customs in Rhode Island in the spring of 1768 when the latter was appointed to the newly-formed American Board of Customs in Boston. Headquartered in Newport, Dudley continually suffered considerable physical and verbal abuse from the populace and procedural harassment from government officials in attempting to execute the navigation acts. Predictably loyal to the crown, he fled the province on the 15th of November 1775.
