The interview conducted with Mr. Clarence Henry “Hank” McCall, Jr. focused on his family, service in World War II and his post-family life after the war. Mr. McCall’s mother and father were both college educated. His mother, Mrs. Florence Gill-McCall held a degree in biology while his father, Mr. Clarence Henry McCall held a mechanical engineering degree and was employed with Gulf Oil in Texas. Mr. McCall, Jr. siblings are George McCall and John McCall. The young family lived in Port Arthur, Texas and moved to Mount Lebanon area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In October of 1943, the interviewee joined the Gato- class submarine USS Greenling, SS-213, and completed six war patrols (45 day missions); he earned the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. Mr. McCall fought in the Pacific Theatre of Operations and was a member of the fire control party that aimed torpedoes at enemy vessels. After the military, Mr. McCall had a variety of careers: accounting, plumbing sales and business, life insurance, and rare coin dealer. Also, the interview covers Mr. McCall’s family life with his wife, Mrs. Irma Winter-McCall, their children, church, and hobbies.
