Description
This study tested the assumption that sensory
conditioning (repetitive pairings of two stimuli) would
yield an image, or analogue thereof, of the second stimulus
(a tone) of 750 Hz. upon later presentation of the
first (a light).
The contention was tested by educing the image in
a context where it would influence tonal judgments as
would an actual tone presentation. Results suggested support for the hypothesis in
that the predicted displacement of judgment functions
was significant. However, the difference between the
imaged tone and an intermodal effect from a light
presentation failed of statistical significance. The
results were interpreted in terms of variables operating
to produce imagery and a more sensitive experimental
design was suggested.
