Description
Adolescence is a period of significant changes in relationships with mothers,
specifically parent-adolescent conflict increases from childhood into adulthood. The
present investigation is designed to address these differences by using adolescent and
mother reports of conflict and relationship quality. The investigation addresses four
research questions. (1) Do characteristics of conflict with mothers differ for adolescents
with and without clinical problems? (2) Do perceptions of mother-child relationship
quality differ for adolescents with and without clinical problems? (3) Do family
characteristics moderate differences between clinical and nonclinical youth in motherchild
of conflict? (4) Do family characteristics moderate differences between clinical and
nonclinical youth in mother-child relationship quality? The results demonstrated that the
clinical group reported more conflicts, greater affect, and less post-conflict interaction
than those of the nonclinical group. The clinical group reported higher negativity than the nonclinical group. In addition, levels of positivity were higher for the nonclinical
group than for the clinical group.

Description
The current study examined the homophilic processes of selection and
socialization in same-sex adolescent friendships across a 3-year period. The
framework of the actor-partner interdependence model for distinguishable dyads was
the main analytic technique, an improvement over previous analysis methods which
often did not allow for simultaneous exploration of selection and socialization.
Within the friendships, adolescents were distinguished based on their general peer
acceptance levels, and similarity was assessed for three behaviors: deviant behavior,
depression, and achievement motivation. Results showed evidence of both selection
and socialization for deviant behavior and achievement motivation, but not for
depression. Furthermore, partner influence paths suggested that more accepted
friends typically exerted more influence on less accepted friends. Gender also
moderated results, with girls tending to have stronger effects than boys.

Description
As children enter adolescence, social status within the peer hierarchy gains
importance. Variable-oriented research has linked adolescent popularity with both
positive and negative adjustment outcomes. Popularity may be better understood with
reference to types or subgroups of similar individuals, identified through person-oriented
approaches. Resource Control Theory (RCT: Hawley, 1999) posits three distinct types of
popular adolescents: coercive, prosocial, and bistrategic. The existence and adjustment
correlates of the prosocial and coercive groups have been well-established, but little
evidence supports the existence of a bistrategic popular group of adolescents, and even
less is known about their adjustment correlates. The present study aims to confirm the
existence of the popularity groups hypothesized by RCT and to identify group differences
in social adjustment and problem behaviors.
A sample of 568 adolescents (n = 288 girls, 280 boys; M age = 12.50) completed
peer nomination procedures and self-report questionnaires in the Fall and Spring of the
7th and 8th grades. Longitudinal latent profile analyses classified adolescents into profile groups on the basis of initial physical aggression, relational aggression, and prosocial
behavior, and four time points of popularity spanning the 7th and 8th grades. Repeated
measures ANOVAs examined profile group differences in social adjustment (peer
acceptance, peer rejection, physical victimization, relational victimization, and preference
for solitude) and problem behaviors (disruptiveness and delinquency) across the 7th and
8th grades.
Results indicate that adolescents fall into one of four distinct groups: aggressive
popular, prosocial popular, bistrategic popular, and average. Bistrategic popular
adolescents evinced positive social adjustment, exhibiting the highest levels of popularity
and peer acceptance and the lowest levels of peer rejection, victimization, and preference
for solitude. Despite their social skill advantages, bistrategic popular adolescents were
also at risk for problem behaviors. Bistrategic popular adolescents scored above average
on problem behaviors, including physical and relational aggression, disruptiveness, and
delinquency. Bistrategic popular adolescents successfully navigate the social world in a
manner that both offers hope for positive long-term adjustment and concern for the same.

Description
Criminologists have long since documented a connection between peer deviance and personal deviance. Some theories suggest that this connection is due to a learning process where individuals may adopt the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of those with whom they have significant interactions, such as friends. While individuals may be susceptible to learning anti-social behavior from peers, it is unclear if certain personality characteristics may affect this relationship. The purpose of this study is to determine if differences in specific personality characteristics, such as self-esteem, introversion and extroversion, can have a moderating effect on the pressures to participate in the use of drugs and alcohol that are projected on to individuals during their adolescent years. The findings of the current study can lead to new pathways in substance use prevention and personality assessment in conjunction with risk assessment for juveniles during their middle and high school years.

Description
This study measured the impact of a gender-specific school counseling curriculum,
“Girl Talk” on: relational aggressive behaviors, pro-social behaviors, student
connectedness, cohesiveness, and social self-efficacy. The “Girl Talk” program consists
of five sessions and was delivered as part of a comprehensive school counseling program. Fifth grade girls in four elementary schools (N=151) from one large, Southeastern school district participated in the study. Girls at two elementary schools received the “Girl Talk” program (treatment group; n=85) and their peer counterparts (comparison group; n=66) at the two remaining schools received their regular school counseling program. A series analysis of variance and an analysis of covariance test, using an alpha level of .05, was conducted to determine if statistically significant differences existed between participants' posttest scores by group condition on the Peer Relations Questionnaire (Rigby & Slee, 1993b), My Class Inventory–Short Form Revised (Sink & Spencer, 2005), the Peers and Friends subscales of the Hemingway Measure of Pre-Adolescent Connectedness (Karcher, 2005), and the Social self-efficacy subscale of the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children (Muris, 2001). Statistically significant differences were found in the areas of relational aggressive behaviors, pro-social behaviors, student connectedness, cohesiveness, and social self-efficacy. Partial eta square effect sizes were reported for each measure. The results support the positive impact that school counselors can have when using a systemic, gender-specific classroom guidance curriculum for reducing relational aggression among pre-adolescent girls.

Adolescent friendships are critical for adjustment but are extremely unstable.
Dyadic characteristics may put friendships at risk for dissolution, whereas individual
characteristics may put individuals at risk for participating in unstable friendships. The
present study examines whether dyadic or individual school-related characteristics
predict rates of adolescent friendship dissolution. A sample of 410 adolescents (n=201 males, 209 females; M age=13.20 years) participated in 573 reciprocated friendships originating in the 7th grade which were followed from 8th-12th grade. Discrete-time survival analyses evaluated grade 7 dyadic and individual characteristics (sex, age, ethnicity, number of friends, peer acceptance, peer rejection, leadership, and school competence) as predictors of the occurrence and timing of friendship dissolution.
Dissimilarity in sex, peer acceptance, and school competence and similarity in
leadership predicted higher rates of friendship dissolution; individual characteristics were not significant predictors. Adolescents seeking friendships with more skilled individuals
risk suffering the downside of dissimilarity, namely dissolution.

Description
Close friends have been shown to influence adolescent problem behaviors,
especially alcohol abuse (Urberg, Degirmencioglu, and Pilgrim, 1997). The degree of
influence, however varies as a function of individual characteristics such as peer
acceptance (Laursen, Hafen, Kerr, and Stattin, 2012) and age (Popp et al., 2008). The
present study examines whether differences in influence extend to perceptions of
friendship quality. Using a sample of 764 Swedish adolescents involved in stable samesex reciprocal best friend relationships that lasted at least one year, analyses used
distinguishable dyad actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) analyses (Kenny,
Kashy, & Cook, 2006) to track influence over two years of the friendship. More
satisfied friends were more influential than less satisfied friends on intoxication
frequency and truancy. The findings of this study indicate that influence accompanies perceptions of quality. Those with higher perceptions of quality exhibit more influence
on friends who perceive relatively lower quality.

Description
Adolescent orientation toward achievement is hypothesized to be composed of motivation, school achievement, and family values. Previous studies suggest that ability and effort, internal and external orientations, and the intellectual and cultural environment of the family were found to affect adolescent orientation toward achievement. A study was conducted to further explore these proposed components of achievement and reveal the origins, influences, and outcomes of achievement orientation. African-American, Anglo-American, and Hispanic-American sixth grade students were administered multiple questionnaires that addressed different aspects of achievement orientation. After focus groups identified any biased and confusing items, factor analyses were conducted on the instruments. Both the original and revised subscales were correlated with academic achievement outcome variables (i.e., cumulative grade point average, SAT math scores, SAT reading scores, socioeconomic status). Using GPA as the primary outcome variable, Hotelling T-tests between the original and revised subscales revealed that overall the revised subscales were more strongly related to GPA across subsamples than the originals. Furthermore, linear regression analysis demonstrated that intrinsically-oriented subscales and subscales related to boredom significantly contributed to the prediction of GPA for Anglo-Americans and African-Americans, but only a subscale related to unknown control over achievement contributed to the prediction of GPA for Hispanic-Americans. However, post-hoc analyses revealed intrinsically-oriented items as having the strongest relationship with GPA across subsamples. The results both supported and expanded upon the literature relating to achievement orientation.

This longitudinal study examined the likely direction of influence between perceived parenting and attachment style in middle childhood. In each of two successive years, measures of perceived parenting behaviors and of attachment style were administered to 164 children (mean age 10.2 in Year 1). Avoidant (but not preoccupied) attachment predicted change in perceived parenting over time, in that avoidant children perceived their mothers as increasingly overprotective, as less monitoring, as less affectionate, and as providing less reliable support over time. There was little evidence that perceived parenting led to change in attachment style over time, although low perceived maternal support in Year 1 predicted increases in preoccupied attachment. Results provide new insights into the direction of effects between attachment and perceived parenting during middle childhood.

This study examined associations between friends, perceptions of conflict and friendship qualities. Early adolescent participants and their same-sex friends (N = 199 dyads) separately completed measures describing actual disagreements, friendship positivity, and negativity. Similar patterns of associations emerged for participant and friend reports of conflict and relationship qualities. Actor and partner associations were estimated with two statistical methods, the APIM (Kashy & Kenny, 2000) and the IDM (Griffin & Gonzalez, 1995). Actor associations suggested perceptions of conflict were linked to self-perceptions of friendship negativity and positivity. Partner associations suggested perceptions of conflict were linked to partner perceptions of friendship negativity, but not to partner perceptions of friendship positivity.
