Description
Development of the buccopharyngeal apparatus from a
generalized gill to a complex filtering mechanism is
described for: Mugil cephalus, 4.9 mm - 52.0 mm SL
(standard length); M. curema, 2.4 mm TL (total length) -
70.0 mm SL; and M. trichodon, 19.5 mm- 27.8 mm SL.
Sequential development of the teeth and the elements in
the buccopharyngeal structure are described. The gut
tract , food, and feeding habits of the three species are
considered in reference to the culture of young mugilids.
Eighteen figures, three tables.
