Description
Two varieties of the Malaysian prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii
(de Man), a Thai-Anuenue hybrid and a pure Anuenue strain, were reared
in the laboratory under uniform conditions for 90 days. Weight gain
and percent survival were recorded at 30-day intervals. No significant
difference ( p<O .05) was found between the two varieties, although
significance (p<O.OS) was found between hybrid animals reared in 1979
and both hybrid and pure strains reared in 1980 (Table 2). This was
attributed to differences in techniques from 1979 to 1980. A second
experiment, testing three feeding levels of one 1980 Thai-Anuenue
hybrid, showed no significant difference (p<O.OS) in weight gain or
survival over three 30-day measurement periods. By utilizing data from
the 1980 broods, transposed and condensed values of present weight gain
(g) versus food (g) as a percent of body weight were regressed, and two
separate growth rates were found after the 30-day measurement periods.
Possible reasons for the "critical point" are proposed, as well as the
benefits of an indoor nursery system, especially in regions wih a short
growing season.
