Joan Joyce, Head FAU Owls Softball Coach. Joan has been inducted into 13 halls of fame, like the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Florida Sports Hall of Fame and the International Softball Federation Hall of Fame. Description
Deborah "Mikki" Minney, Assistant Provost and Director of Freshman Academic Advising Services, 1990-2012. She was instrumental in developing and starting the very successful academic advising and support program for freshmen that resulted in a significant reduction in the dropout rate. As Provost and Director she trained a team of nine professional academic advisors, three graduate student advisors and five faculty advisors to provide counseling for all prospective and incoming FAU students as well as ensuring all freshmen enroll in the freshmen transition course that she taught. Her professional talents were recognized by Outstanding Minority Educator by FAU and the Florida Department of Education. She also was named FAU's Outstanding Freshman Advocate and awarded the Golden Key International Honor Society Advisor of the Year. Description
Frances "Frankie" Myers, EdD, Professor of Theatre, 1969-2001. Prior to arriving at FAU with a Doctorate in education, Frances Myers had been part of the world famous Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. She guided many FAU students to hone their dance and performance skills as well as choreographing numerous theatrical productions. In addition to teaching she was a member of the Faculty Senate and their president for several terms, and also president of the FAU's chapter of United Faculty of Florida. Description
Voncile Smith, Ph.D., Founding Chair, Dept. of Communication. 1966 - 2003. She was started FAU's Department of Communication and it became School of Communication and Multimedia Studies. As a woman's rights advocate she worked on the Salary Equity Committee at FAU to achieve compensation parity for female faculty members and the introduction to women's studies program. Description
Voncile Smith, Ph.D., Founding Chair, Dept. of Communication. 1966 - 2003. She helped organize FAU's chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She was the president of the FAU chapter for the American Association of University Professors and also served a the president and parliamentarian of the Faculty Senate. She was awarded the Faculty Talon Award in 1999 as recognition and appreciation of her many years of service. Description
Virginia Artrip Snyder, FAU Class of 1965. FAU graduate of Government and Politics. She first became a reporter at Fort Lauderdale News and then the Boca Raton News. That career prepared her for becoming a female private eye. In her research of Death Row inmate cases her investigative skills successfully won some acquittals or sentence reductions. Due to that notoriety she became the inspiration for the lead character in the television series "Murder She Wrote" In 1975 Florida Governor Reubin Askew named her an Outstanding Woman of Florida and in 1996 Florida Governor Lawton Chiles claimed her as one of "Florida's Finest" Her papers are forever housed in the Virginia Snyder Collection at FAU's Wimberly Library, including her autobiography. Dorothy E. McBride Stetson, PhD, served as a department chair for 8 years and was Associate Dean of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. She also was acting Director of Women's Studies. She taught courses in comparative politics, women and public policy, and European politics. Description
Dorothy E. McBride Stetson, PhD, was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the Foundation Nationale des Sciences Politiques in Paris and a co-director of the Research network on Gender Politics and the State. She was a pioneer in offering one of the first courses in Women's Studies at FAU. She was prolifically published in her field and edited the books series Women and Politics in Democratic States. Upon her retirement in 2005 she was named Professor Emeritus of Political Science. During most of her career at FAU, she was known as Dorothy McBride Stetson.
